I had a Hermit Thrush this am on of all things, my platform feeder. I
had the scope trained on it, to get some blue Jays taking peanuts, and he flew
into bush and then feeder. He proceeded to eat finely ground corn and seeds
off the platform.
He was quite cautious, but eventually came into full view and I took
pictures with my Nikon 6006 that was attached to my Kiowa scope.The morning
sun lit the area well, and I consulted my guide book to positively ID, from the
Wood thrush , that I know lives in my woods.
Leni Friedman, says this is quite early for Hermit, but the drooping
wings, coloration, does show him different from Wood thrush. Plus I have
never, ever, seen the wood thrush fly to that platform feeder , which is
mounted
on top of a fence.
He was there a good five minutes , before he flew off. He is not a lifer
for me, but a first for this VA yard. I am only 3 months here, and am starting
a whole new yardlist.
I can now also count the loon as a yard bird, as I heard her
calling, early am on Saturday. She was in an inlet, near the back of my house.
It
looks like it is a female Red-throated loon, she is all white in the front part
of her neck and grey invading the back of neck and towards the top of her head.
Going out to the lake this afternoon, to see if I can get a better
picture, than the one , I already have.
