Had an interesting day out at Henricus and Deep Bottom Parks (deep Bottom
is, I believe, just over the Henrico/Charles City County line, off Route 5).
Saw or heard the following at Henricus:
Black Vultures
Turkey Vultures
Red-shouldered Hawk
Red-winged Blackbirds
Carolina Wrens
Northern Mockingbirds
Ospreys
Great Blue Heron
Starlings
Chimney Swifts
Tree Swallows
Chipping Sparrows - at least one adult and one begging juvie - this is the
first time I ever saw an immature Chipping Sparrow. It looked like a Song
Sparrow but without the spot and streaks all the way down the front.
Prothonotary Warbler
E. Wood-Pewee
E. Phoebe
Red-bellied Woodpecker
American Robin
W-b Nuthatch
Blue-gray Gnatcatcher
Tufted Titmouse
Canada Goose/Geese (heard only)
Common Grackles
***saw one duck, the identity of which I'm not sure of, though my guess would
be a Blue-winged Teal - either a female or eclipse plumage male. It had a small
white spot showing on its back on either side. The top of the head and the nape
of the neck were a darker brown than the face, and the bill was very
drab-looking. Am I right in thinking Blue-winged Teal? If so, how usual is it
for there to be one at Henricus in early July? If not, any other thoughts on
what it might be?
Also saw several Painted Turtles, Zebra Swallowtails, a Tiger Swallowtail and a
possible Red-spotted Purple, as well as a couple of dragonfly species.
Deep Bottom was very active this afternoon in just a small area:
Tufted Titmouse
Carolina Chickadee
Prothonotary Warblers (saw 2 - 3)
Carolina Wren
Great Blue Heron
Eastern Bluebird -- sitting in the opening of a Wood Duck house, looking out.
I'm guessing he's nesting in there, as he eventually went in as I was watching
him. Anyone else ever encounter a Bluebird in a Wood Duck box?
Yellow-billed Cuckoo (heard 2)
Wood Thrush
Red-bellied Woodpecker
Northern Mockingbird
A tree full of about 2 dozen Purple Martins
insects of note: Cicada, three butterfly species - Silver-spotted Skipper,
Zebra Swallowtail, possible Red-Spotted Purple, and one dragonfly species that
I could ID - a 10-Spotted Dragonfly. Lots of little, tiny brown dragonflies (or
possibly damselflies) over the water, as well as some very tiny butterflies or
moths.
The path at Deep Bottom had lots of poison ivy along the edges.
