After contacting key Alexandria officials about the removal of plants
from Monticello Park, I received a response from Kirk Kincannon and
Aimee Vosper stating that this removal would be halted for 2003. Because
they had been advised that it is best to remove plants in the spring
before they go to seed, the city currently plans to resume plant removal
in early spring 2004. I immediately asked Kincannon to tell me which and
how many plants are scheduled to be removed and where those plants are
located. I am terrified that they will end up removing all of the brush
that makes this park so attractive to warblers, grosbeaks, tanagers, and
other migrants--with no time next year to replace it with anything the
birds will find useful as a substitute.
We need to press the city to halt ALL plans for plant removal from
Monticello Park unless and until it has a scientfically sound method in
place to do this without destroying what makes the park attractive to
birds.
