On Saturday afternoon, we birded parts of Frederick & Clarke counties primarily
looking for raptors. My daughter Karen was here taking a respite from COLD
Minneapolis. Ian Topolsky came with us and Sue Heath joined us later to look
for owls.
One highlight of the day was a ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK in a new spot that was found
by Sue Heath before we met her. This bird is a few miles north of Winchester.
The original RLHA was refound south of Middletown at the Cedar Creek
Battlefield where it's been since Christmas.
Raptors for the day:
Harrier - 6 (1M; 5 Female or imm.)
Cooper's Hawk - 3
Red-shouldered Hawk - 4
Red-tailed Hawk - 30
ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK - 2 (light morph)
Kestrel - 11
Great Horned Owl - 1
SHORT-EARED OWL - 5
Aside from raptors, other notable birds were a flock of 23 Meadowlarks in the
SEOW field as well as the male Blue-winged Teal we found on New Years Day.
Notable vehicle was a "cherry" '58 Edsel.
