I would like to get some feedback from those of you who have been fortunate
enough to see this bird.
On my fifth try today, I might have seen the Harris's Sparrow. That's a VERY
BIG might. I was on my way out, close to the parking lot, but I went left over
the little bridge into the next pod. Here I saw a large sparrow that was
unlike any I have ever seen. When I first saw this bird, it was fairly low in
some shrubs and a very small tree. It did not sit still very long. What I saw
was a large sparrow with a buffy face and very prominent dark streaking on the
sides of a very light breast. I did not get a chance to note the bill or the
top of the head before it took off towards the road into some high trees (that
in itself seems unlike anything posted previously). I followed it from tree to
tree, but by this time my views were not good.
What I would like to know from those of you who have seen it, is whether you
believe the bird you saw to be an immature winter bird or an adult winter bird.
I'll be going back again. Hope all of you who see this bird will keep posting
where you saw it and what you noted about its appearance.
