[va-bird] Harlequin Duck at CBBT

I am forwarding this message I received regarding a Harlequin Duck seen Friday,
Oct. 29. I skipped the first island on my way back home, so I didn't see him.
Always a nice bird, and doubly so if you're a novice birder from Tennessee!

David,
I am from Morristown, TN and I was in the Elderhostel group this past week. I
just got home early this evening. It was too far to drive all the way
yesterday, so I took two days and spent some time on the Blue Ridge Parkway
today.
Yesterday, when I stopped on the first man-made island of the Chesapeake Bay
Bridge Tunnel, I spotted a male Harlequin Duck sitting on one of the rocks
below the bridge. I know I'm a novice birder, but there was no mistaking this
bird - it looked just like the one in my Kaufman Guide! He was beautiful!! I
made a couple of photos of the bird, but I don't know how good they will be.
When a small fishing boat came by, the little duck jumped in the water and swam
around until the boat went by and then climbed back up on the rocks where he
was still sitting when I finally tore myself away and got back in my car.
Needless to say, I was very surprised to find this little duck, especially
since it appears from my guide that this bird isn't a regular for this part of
the country.
Do you know anything about previous sightings? If it is rare, is there someone
I should contact with my information and maybe send a photo to?
Again, thanks for sharing your expertise and love of birding with us this past
week.
