Weather:
Although overcast throughout the day, a steady NNW wind (12-22km/h) kept
low clouds at bay along the top of the ridge, providing enough ceiling for
birds to fly low. Occasional bright blue peaking through and even brief
periods of sunshine by mid-afternoon before winds diminished and low
clouds moved in. There were a few rain drops between 12-1 p.m. standard
time.
Winds diminished to 6-11km/h by 2 p.m. out of the NW and by 3 p.m. it was
pretty still and clouds began to drop low over the north ridge.
Temp: 19C > 20c;
Humidity: 66% increasing to 70% dropping to 63%
Bar.Pressure: 1011;
Raptor Observations:
After four days of heavy fog, overcast and rain, the birds were ready to
fly.
Good showing of Osprey, most coming low up over the ridge from Waynesboro,
possibly from South River. Two came over low at 11:56 a.m.
There were several small groups of 4-5 sharpies but most in pairs or
single birds.
Season's first Northern Goshawk, an immature, flew low over the gap
heading SW @ 12:05 p.m. standard time.
The few BW for the day came through between 2-3 p.m. that included a
single bird and one kettle of 4 birds circling over Waynesboro with kettle
of vultures.
Non-raptor Observations:
Blue Jay- several small flocks averaging 22-26 birds each
Tree Swallow - hundreds to thousand pushing through including several
swirling clouds mixed with Northern Rough-winged and hundreds of Chimney
Swift.
A large wedge of Canada Goose flying over the valley heading south.
