Observation start time: 11:00:00
Observation end time: 15:00:00
Total observation time: 4 hours

Official Counter: Mike Purdy

Observers:

Visitors:
Very few people on the parkway today, and even fewer pulled into the
parking lot. No hikers of any kind.

Weather:
Temps. continue to be warm for late November ranging in the high 50s
F. Light breeze out of the East. A thin veil of high clouds covering 100%
of the sky. Visibility was good but with some haze.

Raptor Observations:
Only one Redtail counted. A Cooper's Hawk, an unidentified accipiter,
and a second Redtail were all seen heading North. Several TVs were seen
moving up and down the ridge. A Sharp-shinned Hawk was seen hunting in the
woods on the drive home along the parkway.

Non-raptor Observations:
Non raptors seen or heard included an Eastern Phoebe, Downy, Hairy, and
Pileated Woodpeckers, 3 Ravens, 4 Carolina Chickadees, 2 White-breasted
Nuthatches, a Bluebird, a Goldfinch, and a singing Carolina Wren.
It was unusually quiet on the mountain today. Even the Ravens were quiet
with only the sound of their wings beating as they flew by. The only other
sounds were the soft pecking of the Downy, a distant train and cows mooing
in the valley far below. One could easily have taken a nap, of course one
wouldn't do something like that while keeping track of the hawk migration.

Predictions:
Bill, John and Sharon will count more hawks than I counted today. It has
to get better.
