Official Counter: Mike Purdy
Observers: John Williamson
Visitors:
One couple from Mass. stopped briefly. No one treading on the
Appalachian Trail today.
Weather:
Very light breeze out of the WNW most of the day, sometimes wind almost
nonexistent. Cloud cover at beginning of count 40%, clearing to 0% midday
with clouds moving in later in the afternoon becoming 100%. Visibility
was excellent. Temp. ranged from 42F - 52F.
Raptor Observations:
Very slow day with only 5 migrating raptors counted. An imm. Golden
Eagle at 11:59 was the highlight of the day. We were watching a kettle of
18 TVs out over the valley to the West that appeared to be migrants, when
we noticed the eagle below the horizon and much closer to the lookout. It
stayed in view for a couple of minutes, circling as it tried to find some
lift, before finally moving out heading SW. A few resident Redtails were
up and down testing the wind. Both species of vultures observed regularly
throughout the day. Unlike some of the hawks, the vultures had no trouble
finding lift.
Non-raptor Observations:
A small flock of Eastern Bluebirds appeared to be migrants as well as a
lone Ring-billed Gull constantly calling. If it was calling to any
companions they were too high for us to see.
