Virginia Birders,
Michelle and I decided to bird the reclaimed strip mine site at Guesses Fork
in Buchanan County this morning. We were expecting Blue-winged Warblers and
were not disappointed as we found seven among the Autumn Olive bushes. New
birds for us in 2006 also included our first Prairie Warbler, Palm Warbler, and
Worm-eating Warblers. We found White-eyed Vireos in several spots, along with
Yellow-throated Vireos and Blue-headed Vireos. We found a total of 10 warbler
species, bringing our weekend warbler species total to 15.
Another highlight of the day was a possible Greater Yellowlegs. We haven't
reviewed our video yet but will do so after Easter dinner tonight.
