Hola,
I made the four-plus hour trek to Galax on Thursday with my father Mike and
Ian Topolsky. We managed to make it through Botetourt County, twice, without
running into Tad Finnell, which is good.
We arrived at the location on Larkspur Lane a little after eight AM. Glen
Eller came along just a few minutes after, and we got about a three minute
look at the towhee before it disappeared. We waited the bird out, and at
about
ten-forty-five it reappeared, this time for about one minute. There were a
couple other guys there when the bird appeared the second time, but I didn't
get their names beyond Kent and Jim.
We left Galax and headed to Highland County. The windy-but-mild weather
disappeared at the Confederate Breastworks, and dropped about fifteen degrees
and started snowing. Best birds in Highland were a light morph Rough-legged
Hawk in the Blue Grass Valley, and a young Golden Eagle on Hardscrabble Road,
a
half-mile or so beyond the turnoff for Havener Road (I think that's the
name). The eagle was playing in the high winds.
Cheers,
Todd
