Hello all,
Sunday started out cloudy and windy but, all in all, turned out to be a great
day for bird watching.
We started at Sunrise Valley Park in Reston hoping to find the American Bittern
spotted there Saturday morning. We did not see the Bittern but did see our FOS
PALM WARBLER, as well as a BELTED KINGFISHER and a GREEN HERON.
Then it was on to Occaquan NWR. Highlights included:
RUDDY DUCKS probably 200 or more
BLUE-WINGED TEAL
GREATER SCAUP
YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERs were everywhere
BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER
BONAPARTE'S and LAUGHING GULLS off Deephole Road
ROYAL and FORSTER'S TERNS
OSPREYS--many, many nests on shore as well as off shore on navigation markers
and small off shore islands
immature BALD EAGLES
KING RAIL at least two along Deephole Road--one seen and one heard
AMERICAN TREE, SWAMP, SONG, and WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS
TREE SWALLOWS
EASTERN BLUE BIRDS
Good birding to all,
Jay and Carol Hadlock
