[va-bird] Greater White-fronted Goose, Fauquier County

All,

At 12:30 pm today, I observed a Greater White-fronted Goose in a flock
of approximately 900 Canada Geese along Harrison Road in Fauquier
County. The geese were spread out in the pasture quite close to the
road and the Greater White-fronted was easily seen through binoculars.
This goose sports a breast patch pattern identical to the one I sketched
of a Greater White-fronted Goose seen in the same area last winter. If
these geese can be identified by this patch, then this is the same goose
returning year after year. A Greater White-fronted Goose was tallied on
The Plains CBC this past Sunday in this same area and was no doubt the
same bird.

If you are looking for this bird, try to get out to Harrison Road in the
next few days from about 11:00 until 2:00 or 3:00. When I get there
earlier than 10:00 there are seldom birds here. The geese seem to move
their day roost every week or two so best to get out there as soon as
possible for a chance to see it. If not, wait a few weeks and then give
it a try. This bird seems to alternate between a private lake about
5-10 miles from Harrison Road and the lake at Harrison Road.
