There was a good variety of warblers at Great Falls NP on Sunday morning,
though numbers of each species other than Yellow-rumps continued in low
single digits. A composite total of at least 16 species were seen or heard
among three separate groups of birders as follows: Parula, Chestnut-sided,
Magnolia, Black-throated Blue, Yellow-rumped, Black-throated Green,
Yellow-throated*, Blackpoll, Redstart, Prothonotary*, Worm-eating, Ovenbird,
Northern Waterthrush, Louisiana Waterthrush, Common Yellowthroat, and
Canada*.
*First seen/heard in the park this year to my knowledge. Talk about a crazy,
mixed-up migration.
Scarlet Tanagers and Baltimore Orioles were also in good view. An Orchard
Oriole was a bit baffling. It was singing and "lemon" yellow underneath
implying a first year male, but lacked the diagnostic black bib. Do the
females sing too? Comment anyone?
