[va-bird] Great Falls NP, April 27

Hello, birders.

I birded Great Falls NP on Sunday, Apr. 27. I covered
the park from the mouth of Difficult Run all the way
to near the border with Riverbend Park. The day
started off foggy near the river but the sun quickly
burned off the fog. The temp. got up to 70 in the
early afternoon. Some birding highlights are below:

-Spotted Sandpiper
-Caspian Tern - Standing on a rock in the river. I
don't think I've seen this species in the park before.
-Gr.-crst. Flycatcher
-Four species of vireo - Warbling, Yel.-throated,
Red-eyed, Blue-headed. I heard the Warbling along the
swamp trail, where it seemed out of place to me.
-R.c. Kinglet
-Wood Thrush - only 2
-No. Parula
-Yel.-rumped Warbler - Abundant, especially along the
Ridge Trail.
-B.t. Green Warbler
-B&W Warbler
-Worm-eating Warbler
-Ovenbird
-La. Waterthrush - Includes a pair along the Swamp
Trail. One bird was gathering nesting material.
-Sc. Tanager - only 2
-Indigo Bunting - 1, at usual spot near Cow Hoof Rock

Butterflies were common in the afternoon, with mostly
E. Tiger Swallowtails and duskywings seen. I always
enjoy the wildflowers in this park. Wild Azalea,
among many other species, is blooming now.
