[va-bird] Great Dismal Swamp via Kayak.

Hey VA Birders, I explored the Great Dismal Swamp from a different angle
this past Friday (May 25). My Dad and I launched our kayaks into the Great
Dismal Swamp Canal via the wonderful boat ramp off of Rt. 17 in Chesapeake.
We then entered the approximately 3-mile long Feeder Ditch and paddled
through it to finally enter Lake Drummond at the heart of the swamp. I
highly recommend this trip to anyone with a canoe/kayak, because paddling
into Lake Drummond is a truly unique and memorable experience. It was a
beautiful day, and it was amazing that we were the only two people on all of
Lake Drummond! That was a special feeling, and to be in such a beautiful,
isolated, and truly wild place all by ourselves was very inspiring. Anyway,
on to the birds! The most unexpected birds that we saw were three
Red-headed Woodpeckers, we got excellent views as they were very active in
the trees along the shoreline of Lake Drummond. Also, Prothonotary Warblers
were literally everywhere, as we counted 35 of them. We are fortunate to
still have this national treasure, a true wilderness. A list of the birds
that we saw is below.

                            Nick Flanders.

                            Newport News.
