VA-Birders,
On Fri, 4/13, Ben Copeland, my husband Lee and I birded Railroad Ditch at the
Great Dismal Swamp.
We had 10 warbler species, with excellent looks at several male PROTHONOTARY
WARBLER and COMMON YELLOWTHROAT as well as two beautiful male AMERICAN
REDSTART. WHITE-EYED VIREO were abundant. Complete list from eBird follows.
One highlight was a GREEN HERON that flew up and landed on a small bare tree
branch in an open area, permitting a wonderful photo opportunity.
The BARRED OWL and LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSH were heard at Washington Ditch, where
we birded for a little while after finishing at Railroad Ditch.
To drive on Railroad Ditch, you have to get an access code for the gate at the
refuge headquarters building. Hours are 7:30 am - 4:00 pm, Mon-Fri. More
information is at: http://www.fws.gov/northeast/greatdismalswamp/
You'll also find information about the upcoming Great Dismal Swamp Birding
Festival on May 11-13.
Great birding!
