Mark your calendars for the first ever Great Dismal Swamp Birding Festival =
May 11th-13th.
Celebrating International Migratory Bird Day, this festival will feature =
guided bird walks, bus tours,
owl hoots, bluebird house building and other family activities. Event =
participants will receive an invitation to=20
a festival reception at the Suffolk Cultural Arts Center on Saturday =
afternoon. =20

More than 200 bird species have been identified since the refuge=92s
establishment, ninety-six of which have been reported as nesting on or =
near
the refuge. Birding is best during spring migration from April to June
when the greatest diversity of species (particularly warblers) occurs. =
Two
southern species, the Swainson=92s warbler and Wayne=92s warbler (a race =
of the
black-throated green warbler), are more common in the Great Dismal Swamp
than in other coastal locations.
