Here is the report I attempted to post yesterday evening.  One correction to
summary I sent today:  It was White-breasted Nuthatch, NOT Downy that
caught, dewinged and carried wingless dragonfly to nesting cavity.

Great Dismal Swamp - Sunday, April 2, 2006 Report

After spending Saturday doing some much neglected gardening, I took to the
road today, in part to recruperate, and headed to Great Dismal Swamp. Spring
comes early in the southern swamp land and the day was full of special
treats.  There were a few warblers, including a singing (insect-twilling)
WORM-EATING WARBLER along Jericho Ditch, BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER, BLACK AND
WHITE WARBLER, PINE WARBLER, NORTHERN PARULA (singing), COMMON YELLOWTHROAT
(singing),  WHITE-EYED VIREO (singing), WATERTHRUSH (probably Louisianna),
GRAY CATBIRD, RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET, BARRED OWL, RED-SHOULDERED HAWK (nesting
pair), SHARP-SHINNED HAWK, EASTERN TOWHEE, BROWN THRASHER, RUBY-CROWNED
KINGLET (1).

There was no lacking of woodpeckers, including Downy, Hairy, Pileated,
Red-bellied and Northern Flicker.  The BIG surprise was a single
RED-COCKADED WOODPECKER located approximately 35 feet in from Jericho Ditch
road approximately 1/2 to 2/3 from White Marsh Road.

Many WHITE-BREASTED NUTHATCH, including one I observed removing wings from a
rather large dragonfly before carrying the wingless body to nearby tree
where it disappeared inside a cavity.  It reemerged a few seconds later.

The true gems of the day were the many species of butterfly including

Zebra Swalowtail - numerous
Eastern Tiger Swallowtail - 1
Question Mark
Wild Indigo Duskywing (photographed but not 100% sure)
Horace's Duskywing (photographed)
Sleepy Duskywing (photographed)
Spring Azure - 1
Cloudless Sulphur
Cabbage White
Falcate Orangetip (male and female)
Skipper species
