Greetings,
Spent Saturday afternoon with my Kathryn Warman, Bob Abrams, and Joan
Boudreau hanging a half-dozen Kestrel boxes in the general vicinity of
Remington. Tripped over a couple cool birds while doing so, mentioned in the
subject line above.
The four Ibises were seen in flight over the Rappahannock River, flying
southeast a ways. They were obviously of the Plegadis genus, but beyond that
would be impossible to truthfully say. By no means do I think they were
anything other than Glossy. Record keeping in Fauquier is pretty recent, and
I've not come across anyone with old records from the area (yet). So with
that caveat, I say these are new for the county (but I'm not fooling myself
into thinking they are county firsts). If anyone has information otherwise,
I would love to hear from them.
The Grasshopper Sparrows (two of them) were singing from along Freeman's Ford
Road (route 651 north of Remington), about a mile north of the intersection
with US 29. This is a good spot for breeding Grasshopper Sparrows, Horned
Larks, and has held Dickcissel and Savannah Sparrows in summers past.
Near Botha we found a pair of Red-shouldered Hawks, one sitting low on a
nest. If anyone finds raptor nests in Fauquier I'm always eager to hear
about them too.
Cheers,
Todd
