VA-Birders,
The Hampton Roads Bird Club explored two areas of the Newport News Park system
on Sat, 5/13, that are located in adjacent York County (Grafton area between
Tabb and Yorktown). The spots are located at the end of Darby Rd off Rt 17 and
on Oriana Rd near the Harwood Mill Reservoir parking lot. We got permission to
drive into both areas for the field trip, but you can park by the locked gate
any time and explore by foot. These are parts of the sector I cover for the
Christmas and spring bird counts, and they have an abundance of birds in the
spring.
12 members participated, and we tallied 66 species between 7:30 am and 1:00 pm.
A complete list is included below.
Highlights of birds seen at Darby Rd were BLACK-THROATED BLUE, MAGNOLIA and
PROTHONOTARY WARBLER, RED-EYED VIREO, ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK and a pair of
SUMMER TANAGER.
On Oriana Rd everyone had great looks at a GREAT-CRESTED FLYCATCHER, EASTERN
KINGBIRD, INDIGO BUNTING AND WHITE-EYED VIREO. Several of us also saw PRAIRIE
WARBLER, YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT, RED-SHOULDERED HAWK and FIELD SPARROW. The last
species we recorded, a pair of EASTERN BLUEBIRDS, was a great ending to a very
productive morning.
