Hello VAbirders,
We had just dropped my daughter off at her class north of Old Town
Alexandria this morning, so now my son and I were ready for "the" goose
chase. "Gabriel, turn the cell phone on." After going south on Washington
St. for only a few blocks, the phone sang. It was Ken Hollinga, calling to
see if I was on the trail of the Barnacle Goose. "Yes, I'm headed for
Belle Haven right now." "Oh, don't go there, the goose is at Cameron Run,
near the waterslide." Hot dog! Back on 95 and approaching the Eisenhower
exit, we could see the waterslide and to the right, birders. HOT
DOG! "Don't fly, little goose, please don't fly!"
That little goose didn't fly, and Gabriel and I got the privilege of seeing
it. My oh my, people sure didn't exaggerate, it IS beautiful, and
definitely worth the chase. Go see it if you possibly can. My daughter
happens to have another class next weekend. Think I'll go on another goose
chase and try to see it again. Yessir, that is one sweet goose!
Hooray for everyone who found and refound (many times over) the Barnacle
Goose! Hooray for Ken Hollinga! Hooray for cell phones! Thanks everyone!
And especially, hooray for the Barnacle Goose!!!
