A good day at my Reston townhouse, with a steady stream of normal feeder
birds stopping by throughout. Highlights were my first Brown Creeper of the
year and three hawks: one Red-Shouldered and two Red-Tailed (one adult, one
juvenile).
Had an interesting moment with the juvenile Red-Tailed. It sat in a tree in
some woods behind my house for about 20 minutes before taking off toward my
feeders (and directly at me behind a window). When it flew, it seemed to be
"hiding" behind a tree, as I could see its wing tips emerging from either
side of a tree as it approached. The feeder birds scattered as the hawk
neared the feeders and it flew to within about 15 feet of my window before
swooping off. Until that moment, it had been flying directly at my face.
Anyway, his hunt was unsuccessful.
