Today I went down to Kerr Reservoir in Mecklenburg County to take a look
around. It turned out to be a good shorebird day with 9 species found.
First bird of the day was a juvenile BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER found among
numerous KILLDEER at the Farrar Sod Farm on Baskerville Road. Later in
the day I had 8 shorebird species feeding among the exposed rocks below
the dam with the best one being a juvenile STILT SANDPIPER. Other birds
there included more KILLDEER, SEMIPALMATED PLOVER (1), LESSER YELLOWLEGS
(2), SOLITARY SANDPIPER (1), SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER (3), LEAST SANDPIPER
(4) and PECTORAL SANDPIPER (1).
There wasn't much evidence of songbird migration except for a
WORM-EATING WARBLER at Dick Cross WMA. Elsewhere, there were 3 GREAT
EGRETS in the marsh on Route 1. Good birding.
