I saw a first fall female Golden-winged Warbler at Riverbend Pk (Fairfax
County) this Tuesday morning. It was in a small wave of warblers-Magnolia,
Restart, Yellowthroat- in the underbrush below the cedars along the path that
cuts
through the meadow. It looked much like the bird I'd seen in my yard on Sept.
l. Since I live within a mile of the Riverbend meadow, it may be the same bird
lingering here before heading south, but this is merely conjecture on my
part.
Riverbend was slower today than it has been since Saturday, when I heard
there were at least 14 species of warblers there. On Sunday, there was a nice
wave of warblers with a Nashville and at least two Tennessees. The highlight
on
Monday was a first fall Warbling Vireo, plus Orioles and Tanagers. Today,
other than the small wave of warblers mentioned above, there were Black and
White
Warblers, and lots of Indigo Buntings, Goldfinches, Red-eyed Vireos, and
Pewees. Another birding party reported hearing Rose-breasted Grosbeaks.
Conspicuously absent are Eastern Bluebirds, which I have not seen in the meadow
in the
past two weeks, whereas formerly they were a sure thing at Riverbend. I
assume last year's harsh winter took its toll.
