All,
This morning at 11:40 I found a single American Golden-Plover in with
50-60 Killdeer at the sod farms along Loudoun County Parkway. The birds
were on the east side of the road in an area of freshly harvested sod
about 3/10 a mile north from where the road turns into gravel if
approaching from the south or 1 mile south from where the road turns
gravel if approaching from the north. The golden-plover was easily seen
from the car with binoculars (and in the rain) as the area of harvested
sod is right next to the road. I didn't get out of the car since it was
raining and I think doing so would spook everything. There was also a
peep that I think was a Semipalmated Sandpiper. It was definitely NOT a
Buff-breasted Sandpiper.
To reach this site from the south, take Rt. 28 north to Waxpool Road and
turn left. Go about 1/2 mile to Loudoun County parkway and turn right.
Follow the road until it becomes gravel. From the north, you can take
Rt. 28 south to Waxpool road and turn right or you can turn directly
onto Loudoun Cnty Parkway from Rt. 7 a bit west of the Rt. 7/Rt. 28
interchange.
