VA BIRDers,
During a mostly uneventful windy day (save for being rained, snowed and
sleeted upon for about 10 minutes) I visited Pohick Regional Park, the boat
ramps area. I scoped an immature Golden Eagle flying over the general
vicinity of the marsh at the Accotink Refuge - across the bay from my vantage
point. This is likely the same bird spotted by Greg Fleming, wildlife
biologist at Fort Belvoir, late Friday morning.
Ringing the Accotink/Pohick/Gunston Bay complex were 35 Bald Eagles, most of
which were perched in trees. I am sure more may have been present earlier in
the day than my visit (which was at about 1000).
Other interesting sightings today were 8 Great Yellowlegs and 12 Common Snipe
at the Great Marsh of Mason Neck.
