Greetings,
On Five Mile Mountain in Franklin County this morning, my son Alan & I enjoyed
watching an immature Golden Eagle flying about twenty five feet above ground
for a while before it spiraled up and away. In thirty years birdwatching,
this is the first Golden Eagle that I have seen anywhere in Franklin County.
Between there and Ferrum, we also saw two Red-shouldered Hawks and three
Red-tailed Hawks. The RT's were all perched in trees. One of the
Red-shouldered was hunting on the ground along the edge of a farm pond, maybe
going for a frog snack. The other Red-shouldered Hawk was screeching loudly
and circling the edge of the field and pine woods by my folks' house. It
perched atop a tall pitch pine and kept on fussing about something.
We checked a couple of ponds and found no waterbirds on one, and on the second
about 30 bread-club mallards, and one female Bufflehead. There were five
killdeer along the shore of this pond.
At my folks house, the birds were really busy at the bird feeders with the
usual feeder birds (C. Chickadees, Titmice, WB Nuthatches, Cardinals, Juncos,
Whitethroats etc) but there was also one male Pine Warbler looking quite
spiffy and ready for spring. This is the second winter in a row that a Pine
Warbler has visited the feeders there regularly.
Best,
Clyde Kessler
