[va-bird] Godwits in Mathews County

Va Birders,

I was finishing a three day loop trip in Mathews County on Sunday, and =
found two Godwits at Bethel Beach, #4 on the VA Birding trail. The light =
didn't give me much color and they flew when a flock of Sanderlings =
screamed by so I didn't see them fly, so no ID. They had long recurved =
bills, whitish eye lines and were the right size, so I don't know what =
else they could have been.=20

Well, I couldn't let the trip end like that so I found a hotel room and =
went back on Monday. One showed up for about two minutes and I tried to =
get some photos, but my digiscoping is about as good as my Godwit IDing, =
so no ID and no usable pictures. Rats, I said. After four days I was =
feeling pretty hashed, too.

I did get Nelson's Sharp-tailed Sparrow on the way out, though. After =
hours of scanning fields of marsh grass and getting only flits along the =
top and then back down, the little guy flies up to the top of a stalk of =
grass and starts singing away, right in front of the car. All I had to =
do was stop and pick up my glasses.

Day one on the Eastern Shore and day two at Back Bay NWR were just =
fantastic, more than I had hoped for. A great way to start my second =
year as a birder. Many thanks to the Cape Henry Audubon Society, =
especially Mike and Vickey for the bonus trip and peep tutorial.

If anyone goes to Bethel Beach, go up the beach past the Osprey nest =
tower, and up the spit. It is a really beautiful place. I hope to get =
back there Friday or Saturday.

Good birding,

John,

Arlington
