VA-Birders,
With the gorgeous weather this week-end, my husband Lee and I were "birding
fools," exploring different parks in our area. I will post highlights of each
location i separate messages.
On Sat morning, April 21, we birded both parts of Beaverdam Park. The most
memorable moment at the Main park was watching an adult BALD EAGLE harrass an
OSPREY carrying a fish. After a few minutes of constantly being followed, the
Osprey dropped the fish in the water, and the Eagle swooped down and picked it
up, heading into the woods with its morning meal.
Other highlights were new species for this park for the year - CHIMNEY SWIFT,
BARN SWALLOW, NORTHERN PARULA, PROTHONOTARY and PRAIRIE WARBLER. We saw and
heard 4 RUBY-CROWNED KINGLETS in close proximity and assumed they're getting
ready to leave the area.
On the North part, we enjoyed great looks at WHITE-EYED VIREO and COMMON
YELLOWTHROAT. But our best surprise came in the last few minutes when a
YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER appeared on some lower branches, gathering materials
for its nest. With the sunlight on its beautiful throat, it was quite a sight.
Complete lists from both observations are listed below in separate lists since
they are set up in eBird as distinct locations.
