Virginia birders,
Mike Iwanik and I visited Ks Pond on Lynnwood Rd
(Rockingham Cty) this morning from approx 0710 0750
am, and we saw both the GLOSSY IBIS and the SORA.
The GLOSSY IBIS was in the open almost the entire time
and was fairly close to the road. Most cooperative.
We heard the SORA twice before seeing it. Its call was
loud, and so we knew it was reasonably close. After
about 10 minutes of careful searching, I found it
foraging among the reeds and grasses. Then Mike and I
enjoyed lengthy scope views, and our line-of-sight to
the Sora was occasionally completely clear.
We also had 1 SOLITARY SANDPIPER, 3 GREEN HERON
(including an immature), and several KILLDEER at Ks
Pond.
On the way back to Charlottesville, we made a quick
stop at Leonards Pond. Nothing unusual: 4 SOLITARY
SANDPIPERS, 2 SPOTTED SANDPIPERS, 6 KILLDEER, 4 CANADA
GOOSE, 4 MALLARD, hordes of TREE SWALLOWS, a few BARN
and NORTHERN ROUGH-WINGED SWALLOWS, and the other
usual suspects.
