The Audubon Society of Northern Virginia (Fairfax Audubon) went hunting for
waterfowl and gulls today, and the 17 people attending succeeded in finding 16
species of waterfowl and 5 of gulls.  Highlight was the immature glaucous gull
at the Prince William County Landfill.  We started off at the Great Marsh Trail
at Mason Neck NWR.  Most ducks were at a distance, but we were able to find
canvasback, ring-necked duck, greater and lesser scaup, black duck, mallard,
gadwall, pintail, green-winged teal, hooded merganser, common merganser, Canada
goose and tundra swan.  We also observed a pair of bald eagles on their nest,
several other eagles, about a dozen greater yellowlegs, a single cormorant, a
Cooper's hawk carrying a meal, and a surprise kestrel.  We then went to Mason
Neck State Park and surveyed Belmont Bay.  Ducks were pretty scattered, but we
added ruddy duck, bufflehead, and red-breasted merganser.

Our visit to the landfill started on an odd note, when we were told to pull
over to the side and wait for an escort.  We were directed to the top of the
mound, where we perched on a hill overlooking a gull loafing area.  We were
directed to a lesser black-backed gull by another group of birders.  After a
long while, the glaucous gull flew in and started preening.  We all got great
looks.  Thousands of gulls were swarming around the dumping area, but we could
not identify any other goodies.  Nevertheless, we had a great time watching the
gulls, the bald eagles perched in surrounding woods and soaring eagles,
red-tailed hawk, and both vultures.

All told, our party found 59 species.  Here is the list:
