Joyce and I crossed York River bridge about 4 p.m. today (3-20) and saw
Northern Gannets downriver. We went to the park by the bridge (Gloucester
side) and watched for about a half hour. They were spread out from Yorktown to
the mouth of Sara's Creek, to the Coast Guard Station, and on past the
refinery. They were moving around and diving in groups. After diving, a group
would stay on the water for a few minutes. Many were on the water in a long
line out from Sara's Creek. We estimate 1000 to 1500 were in sight. This is
the third year we have seen them in this location at this time of year.
