Mike Iwanik and I made the trek to Galax this morning to see the GREEN-TAILED
TOWHEE. We arrived shortly after 7 AM and by 7:20 we were having great looks
at the towhee as it fed on the ground with White-crowned, Song, and
White-throated Sparrows. We watched the towhee off and on until about 9:10
when it disappeared for awhile. Adam D'Onofrio and Tina Trice joined us around
9:40 and we began trying to relocate the Green-tailed Towhee. The bird
appeared again around 10:00 and was still around when we left shortly after.
While we were watching the towhee, Glen Eller showed up with some seed to
sprinkle on the ground (Mike and I had bought some seed at the local
supermarket and had spread it on the ground there earlier). Glen said that is
is OK for birders to come look for the bird even if the homeowners (Bob and
Rena Perkins) are not around. It is is still best to call Bob at 276-236-8034
or 276-237-1891 or contact Glen Eller at geller@xxxxxx before visiting. If
you go to look for the bird when Bob and Rena or Glen are not present, please
be VERY RESPECTFUL of the adjacent townhome owners privacy and do not walk
through the yards or approach the townhomes without permission. You can easily
observe the bird from the roadside behind the townhomes.
Directions:
From Int. 77, take Rt. 58/221 into the Galax city limits. Look for an
extremely obvious McDonalds on the left. Go straight through the traffic light
there and turn right at the next light onto Larkspur Lane, and continue to the
second set of apartments/townhomes jsut above a self- storage facility. The
towhee is most often seen along the hedgerow behind the townhomes in the trees
and brambles where you can easily see a seed-bell hanging in the tree.
