On Saturday and Sunday, birded on my home turf for the GBBC, getting out
4 times away from the house and the fifth list submitted looking hard at
my feeders. I tallied about 850 individuals and 45 species. Most all
water was frozen over with temps Sunday morning at 5:30 AM a frigid 4
degrees F. But that's all relative; next weekend through Mach 3 Jean and
I will spend the week at 68 degrees North latitude in Saariselka Finland
cross country skiing and hoping for Siberian jay and Siberian tit and
perhaps a ptarmigan or grouse...
As usual, I missed some that I expected like gb heron, red-shouldered
hawk, brown creeper, yr warbler, fox sparrow and purple finch.
Otherwise, was very happy with richness of count. For whatever reason,
one of my lists didn't get included yet-- one that included rn duck and
common raven but I'll get those in later today. It was a great count and
the highlight for me was the count of 17 towhees near the elementary
school in St Louis.
