Hello, birders.
5 TUNDRA SWANS graced the farm pond to the west of
the
barn and silo today. They were resting with a
couple
of CANADA GEESE on my first pass, later the swans
were
feeding in this small, shallow pond. This flock,
which I'm told has been seen in various areas of the
park for 5 days, was quite tame. Once in a while,
flyovers are seen or heard here in the spring but
this
is the first time that Tundras have stopped in as
far
as I'm aware. Other waterfowl that have been around
recently (but that I didn't see) include RUDDY DUCK
and a Red-breasted or Common MERGANSER female.
Either
merg would be a good record for Sky Meadows.
A big count of 21 WILSON'S SNIPE were present today,
a
flock of 16 just outside the park to the north of
the
fishing pond, 4 others were feeding at the edge of
the
farm pond mentioned above, and 1 more rested at the
edge of the other farm pond. Sparrows were abundant
today (6 species) and I saw all 7 species of
woodpeckers in the Walnut Grove. RED-HEADEDS only
numbered 5. 3 pairs of TREE SWALLOWS today, only
near
the ponds. They are a joy to have around, with
their
bright plumage and sweet calls.
