Top bird this week is MISSISSIPPI KITE in VA.
Other birds of interest include CANVASBACK, LESSER SCAUP, RUFFED
GROUSE, NORTHERN BOBWHITE, PIED-BILLED GREBE, WILSON'S STORM PETREL,
YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON, LEAST SANDPIPER, WHIP-POOR-WILL,
RED-HEADED WOODPECKER, LEAST FLYCATCHER, GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLER,
YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT, VESPER and HENSLOW'S SPARROW, DARK-EYED JUNCO,
BLUE GROSBEAK, DICKCISSEL, and BOBOLINK.
A MISSISSIPPI KITE was again seen flying over the Waynewood
subdivision in southeastern Fairfax Co, VA, on June 26. Two
MISSISSIPPI KITES, most likely a nesting pair, were seen in southern
VA June 25, in the vicinity of Emporia, Greensville Co.
A drake CANVASBACK was seen on a pond on Williams Rd a little east of
the Brantwood Golf course (on MD-213) on June 25. The pond also held a
GLOSSY IBIS and two early migrant LEAST SANDPIPERS.
Two LESSER SCAUP were seen in Masonville Cove, Baltimore City, MD on
June 25.
A RUFFED GROUSE hen with six hatchlings was found June 23 near the top
of the trail off of Roth Rock Rd, Garrett Co, MD.
Four NORTHERN BOBWHITES were seen June 23 on a new cross street off of
Landing Neck Rd in Talbot Co, MD. Several NORTHERN BOBWHITES were
reported during a survey in Cecil Co, MD on June 25.
On a pond between Queenstown and Grasonville, Queen Anne's Co, MD two
PIED-BILLED GREBE families were seen on June 27.
On June 26 over 20 WILSON'S STORM PETRELS were seen in the Chesapeake
Bay during a crossing from Scotland, St. Mary' Co, MD to Smith Island,
Somerset Co, MD. A few were also seen on the crossing back later in
the day.
YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS continue to be seen in Sligo Creek,
Montgomery Co, MD with the most recent report on June 22.
WHIP-POOR-WILLS were calling early in the evening on June 23 across
from the George's Creek Brethren Church in Garrett Co.
Several RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS were seen and heard on June 25 at Sky
Meadows SP, Fauquier Co, VA.
LEAST FLYCATCHERS were reported from several locations in western
Maryland and the highlands of Virginia with one observed on the
entrance road to Herrington Manor SP, Garrett Co, all week long and
another on Combination Rd in Garrett Co on June 21. Another was
reported from Glendale Rd and still another from Pea Ridge Rd, both on
June 23. There was also a report of a LEAST FLYCATCHER at the corner
of Rt. 642 and 220 in Highland Co, VA, on June 25.
This week a GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLER was found at O'Bryan's Farm,
Highland Co, VA, on June 25.
Four YELLOW-BREASTED CHATS were seen in the main and back meadows
along the Hike-Bike Trail at Huntley Meadows Park, Fairfax Co, VA on
June 25. That same day YELLOW-BREASTED CHATS were also highly visible
and vocal in the power cut at the Blue Ridge Center for Environmental
Stewardship, in northwestern Loudon Co, VA. A YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT was
found at the National Arboretum, NE DC on June 26 in the meadow
between Fern Valley and the Youth Garden.
Three VESPER SPARROWS were observed during the June 25 survey in Cecil
Co. They were on Kile Rd, Knife Box Rd and Whites Lane. Several VESPER
SPARROWS and two fledglings were seen on Rt. 642 past Blue Grass in
Highland Co on June 25.
HENSLOW'S SPARROWS were reported from Garrett Co, MD last week. On
June 21 one was heard on Combination Rd and, on June 23, several were
heard singing along Pea Ridge Rd.
There was a DARK-EYED JUNCO at Masonville Cove, Baltimore City, MD on
June 25. DARK-EYED JUNCOS were also reported from locations, such as
Garrett Co, where they are more commonly expected during the summer.
BLUE GROSBEAKS continue to be reported from several locations with
sightings at Masonville Cove, Baltimore City, and a pair at Huntley
Meadows Park, both on June 25.
In Talbot Co, MD, a DICKCISSEL was found on Landing Neck Rd on June
23. On Garland Rd, between Knife Box Rd and Kibler Rd, Cecil Co, MD,
there were four singing DICKCISSELS on June 25.
BOBOLINKS appear to be nesting in a pasture in western Loudoun Co
along the west side of Ebenezer Church Rd, near Bluemont, with reports
as recently as June 27.
