This is the Voice of the Naturalist, a service of the Audubon
Naturalist Society. This report was compiled Tuesday, April 25, at 8
pm.
Top birds this week are *ANHINGA in MD, *WHITE-FACED IBIS and AMERICAN
WHITE PELICAN in VA, *SWALLOW-TAILED KITE in MD, and MISSISSIPPI KITE
in VA.
Other birds of interest include ducks, RED-THROATED LOON, AMERICAN
BITTERN, herons, GLOSSY IBIS, rails, shorebirds, cuckoos,
WHIP-POOR-WILL, RED-HEADED WOODPECKER, VEERY, warblers, sparrows,
ROSE-BREASTED and BLUE GROSBEAK, BOBOLINK, PURPLE FINCH, and PINE
SISKIN.
The *ANHINGA at Lilypons Water Gardens, Frederick Co, MD, was seen
every day through the 23rd but not after that date.
At least 4 *WHITE-FACED IBIS in the company of a GLOSSY IBIS and a
possible hybrid, were seen at Huntley Meadows Park, Fairfax Co, VA,
through April 22.
An AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN was seen from the College Creek Hawkwatch on
both April 19 and April 23 soaring over Hog Island, Surry Co, VA.
A *SWALLOW-TAILED KITE was observed for about a minute flying north
over the Fort Smallwood Hawkwatch, Anne Arundel Co, MD on April 24.
A MISSISSIPPI KITE was seen soaring over the Julie Metz Wetlands,
Woodbridge, Prince William Co, VA on April 18. Another was seen flying
over Huntley Meadows on April 21.
A female LONG-TAILED DUCK was seen at Ft. McHenry, Baltimore, MD on
April 20. A female HOODED MERGANSER with two ducklings was observed at
Huntley Meadows on April 19.
A RED-THROATED LOON was seen April 22 off Ingleside at the Eastern
Neck NWR, Kent Co, MD.
Searchers for the WHITE-FACED IBIS at Huntley Meadows were also
rewarded with an AMERICAN BITTERN throughout the week. An AMERICAN
BITTERN was also seen at Lilypons on April 21 along with a LITTLE BLUE
HERON. The American Bittern was seen again on April 22 and 24. An
AMERICAN BITTERN was also present in the wetland cell near the Curtis
parking area at the Phelps WMA, Fauquier Co, VA on April 20. On April
23, an AMERICAN BITTERN was seen at Kenilworth.
A visit to Elliot Island, Dorchester Co, MD on April 20 netted 28
Virginia Rails, 23 CLAPPER RAILS, 1 SORA, and at least 2 BLACK RAILS.
A COMMON MOORHEN was seen on April 23 and 24 on the far side of the
second impoundment at Pennyfield Lock, C&O Canal National Historical
Park, Montgomery Co, MD. Two COMMON MOORHENS were seen in the large
impoundment at Hughes Hollow, Montgomery Co, MD on April 23.
A BLACK-NECKED STILT was photographed at Shirley Plantation in Charles
City Co, VA on April 22.
An UPLAND SANDPIPER was observed in a cornfield along Gibson Rd, White
Hall, northern Baltimore Co, MD on April 22.
A female RUFF was reported from the shallow pools at the Pickering
Creek Nature Center on Presquile Rd in Talbot Co, MD on April 22 and
24.
A YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO was seen near Chestertown, Queen Anne Co, MD on
April 24 and a BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO was closely observed in a backyard
in Suffolk, VA on April 25.
A WHIP-POOR-WILL was briefly heard in Georgetown, DC on April 21.
WHIP-POOR-WILLS were also heard in Waldorf, MD on April 21.
RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS were reported from several locations including
4 on April 19 on Baumgardner Rd S in Carroll Co along Piney Creek; in
the vicinity of Sky Meadows SP, Fauquier Co, VA on April 21; and along
Ebenezer Church Rd in western Loudoun Co near Bluemont, VA on April
24.
CLIFF SWALLOWS were seen at the Howard Co/Carroll Co, MD Rt. 32 bridge
on April 18.
A VEERY was reported from Chino Farms near Chestertown, Queen Anne Co,
MD on April 24.
At least 25 species of warblers were reported from the region during
the week. Highlights included singing SWAINSON'S WARBLERS along the
Jericho Ditch trail April 19 and 22 in the Great Dismal Swamp, Suffolk
Co, VA. HOODED WARBLERS, along with a number of other warblers,
arrived in a rush during the weekend's rains. Some of the best spots
for warblers were Huntley Meadows with 12 different warbler species on
April 21, Monticello Park in Alexandria with 8 species on the same
day, Rock Creek Park, DC, and along Possum Point Rd and Cockpit Point
Rd in Dumfries, Prince William Co, VA with ten species on April 22 and
12 on April 24.
A YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT was caught and banded at the Occoquan NWR,
Prince William Co, VA on April 21.
SUMMER and SCARLET TANAGERS were found along Possum Point and Cockpit
Point Roads on April 22. A SUMMER TANAGER was also seen there on April
24.
VESPER SPARROWS were seen in several locations last week including the
Banshee Reeks Nature Preserve, Loudoun Co, VA on April 19, Kenilworth
Park on April 22, 23 and 24. For the third week in a row one was
singing on territory at Antietam NP on April 19. There were also 3
VESPER SPARROWS April 19 along Six Bridges Rd in Carroll Co. A
GRASSHOPPER SPARROW greeted a driver April 18 on Atoka Rd a few miles
north of Rectortown, Fauquier Co, VA. Two GRASSHOPPER SPARROWS were
also on Six Bridges Rd in Carroll Co on April 19 and one was singing
at Kenilworth Park on April 24.
ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAKS appeared at feeders in Rockville, MD and
Fairfax, VA on April 23. A ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK was also seen at
Glencarlyn Park, Arlington Co, VA the morning of April 25.
BLUE GROSBEAKS were seen in the retired section beyond the barrier at
Kenilworth Park on April 23.
A BOBOLINK was seen April 20 on a wire at the intersection of Bradley
Blvd and Seven Locks Rd, Montgomery Co, MD.
PURPLE FINCHES continued to be reported from a number of different
locations throughout the week.
PINE SISKINS were reported at feeders in Carroll Co, MD on April 19,
and in Ellicott City, Howard Co, MD on April 22.
