Hey all,
Don just sent around photos of this bird. If my eyes do not deceive me, this
bird is a
West Indian Whistling-Duck, one of the rarest species of waterfowl in this
hemisphere. How it got to Dismal Swamp I don't know. This genus is
world-famous for long-distance vagrancy. The nearest breeders are in the
northern Bahama Islands. Hats off to Don for what is perhaps the fastest
circulation of the "word" (less than 1 hour) and the image on a major
Virginia event, whatever its origin.
