VA Birders,
Last weekend, I e-mailed our Arlington County Board and asked them when
we could get the Bird Stream at Fort C. F. Smith Park up and running. Then, on
Tuesday morning, I went to Fort Smith Park, where I saw 2 male Purple Martins
flying around and checking out our martin house. I also found 4 members of
the County park staff working on the Bird Stream! Apparently, the underground
valves had to be dug up and replaced. When I returned the next day
(Wednesday, Apr. 12), I was thrilled to find the Bird Stream running and the
park staff
putting the finishing touches on the project.
The birds seemed to be as happy as I was to see the Bird Stream back in
operation. A Song Sparrow couldn't wait, so it jumped in the back of the
stream for a drink and a bath. Then, as soon as the staff left, a pair of
Cardinals came to drink and bathe, followed by a pair of Am. Goldfinches.
I'm going to send the County Board members an e-mail thanking them for
getting the Bird Stream up and running, and telling them what a good job the
County park staff did. I would like to suggest that other birders who have
enjoyed watching birds there also send them an e-mail thank you, because I
think it
is important for government officials to know we appreciate their efforts.
Be sure to sign your notes with your name and city/county of residence. The
County Board's e-mail address is:

Good birding,
