VA-Birders,
Matt Hafner et al are reporting a possible Brown-chested Martin at Assateague
from this morning, obviously not far from VA. If anyone is visiting
Chincoteague or elsewhere nearby tomorrow, keep an eye out. The suspected
martin is a South American species that has been recorded in North America just
3 other times.
Thanks,
Jay Keller

Excerpt from Matt's post:
"Today I birded Worcester County with Jim Stasz and Hans Holbrook. The
obvious highlight was a MARTIN with the thousands of Tree Swallows flying
between the Assateague Visitor Center and Assateague Island. I'll send out my
notes and details in the next post, I just wanted to get this out early
tonight. I think Brown-chested is the most likely possibility, but I need to
do more research and obtain some outside opinions. The bird was seen twice
briefly by Hans and myself. Once flying over the field SW of the Visitor
Center and once flying over the center itself. This occured between 9:30 and
10:15 this morning, but then the swallows dispersed and we never saw them
concentrated again. We searched for several hours to no avail. Jim Stasz and
I will be down at 7am tomorrow to search again and try to obtain a photo. "
