Yesterday I made a quick circuit of the monastery farm and ponds, and took a
walk in the woods and found 53 species in all.
Of note (to me at least) was a GREEN HERON (still here today) hunting in the
marshy edge of our small pond, and quite a few ACADIAN FLYCATCHERS have carved
out territories and are singing vigorous challenges to each other. I also found
two pairs of KENTUCKY WARBLERS which I believe are nesting, one pair of GREAT
CRESTED FLYCATCHERS chasing a Red-bellied Woodpecker away from a hole, tons of
INDIGO BUNTINGS, and I finally found one of the FIELD SPARROW nests, with
extremely tiny young, obviously just hatched.
I will make a preliminary survey of the breeding birds this weekend, although I
believe the list below largely represents what is nesting here this year.
