VA Birders,
The 14 NVBC members who took part in our walk at Fort C. F. Smith Park in
Arlington Co. on Saturday found 48 species of birds, and I found 3 more after
the walk, for a total of 51 species. When I arrived at the parking lot a few
minutes before our 8:00 am starting time, co-leader Jane Grawe quickly came
over to my car and told me a sandpiper was perched on the split-rail fence at
the back of the parking lot! The bird was a SOLITARY SANDPIPER--a first for
the park. Other highlights were: a GREAT CRESTED FLYCATCHER, a singing VEERY
(which I had seen on Friday), a SWAINSON'S THRUSH, at least 12 CEDAR WAXWINGS,
YELLOW-RUMPED, BLACKBURNIAN, BLACKPOLL, and BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLERS, 3 INDIGO
BUNTINGS, and a pair of ORCHARD ORIOLES. After most of the group had left,
Mike Duffy and I found a female BLUE GROSBEAK near the rock garden. After Mike
left, an adult BALD EAGLE and an OSPREY circled overhead, and a MAGNOLIA
WARBLER came and bathed in the Bird Stream.
Good birding,
Val Kitchens
