Like me, many of you visit Fort Belvoir in Fairfax County to view birds =
and other animals. Most of us visit the Accotink Wildlife Refuge on =
Pohick Road and the Accotink Bay site near the archery range. This week I =
visited another location on the base that could potentially yield good =
birding--especially during spring and fall migration. The site is called =
the Potomac View Trail and the old Belvoir house site. This location can =
be reached by entering the main (Pence) gate at Fort Belvoir on Belvoir =
Road. After stopping at the visitor's center for a temporary auto pass =
(assuming you do not have a military pass), continue straight on Belvoir =
Road for about 1 =BD to 2 miles. At 23 rd street, the road bends sharply =
to the right and merges with this street. At that merger, turn left on to =
23 rd street. (This turn seems awkward and may be improper, but it is the =
easiest way to give you directions.) Travel on 23rd street for a couple =
of blocks and turn right on Forney Loop (residential area). Travel on =
Forney for =BD mile to the parking lot for the trail and house site =
located on the left. There is only room for 4 or 5 cars. Follow the =
signs to the trail and house site located on the banks of the Potomac =
River. William Fairfax built his house (called Belvoir) at this location =
in 1741. Numerous signs describe the house and related grounds. The =
"birding" trail starts at the house site and follows the river southward =
and loops back to its original starting point.=20
Hope you enjoy.
