Greetings...
This morning I birded the Summer Tanager trail at Phelps WMA in southern
Fauquier County, walking to the manmade waterfowl area. I had eight
flycatcher species and four vireos. I'm pretty sure I've never had eight
flycatchers in the same day. They were:
Eastern Wood-pewee, many spots. Yellow-bellied, singing and seen from the
trees between the waterfowl impoundment and the Rappahannock. Acadian, many
spots. Alder, singing and seen in the trees just as the trail enters the
waterfowl area. Mary Argentineau and Larry Robinson had a singing Alder at
the same refuge during the Fauquier County foray last June. I don't recall
specifically where they had that bird. This is the second Alder Flycatcher I
have had in Fauquier this spring, the first found by Chuck Phillips. Least
Flycatcher, one bird from near the parking lot seen and singing. Eastern
Phoebe, one bird, and not seen at Phelps but along 651 between Sumerduck and
Phelps. Great Crested Flycatcher, several. Eastern Kingbird, a few.
Four vireo species were Philadelphia, Yellow-throated, Red-eyed, and
White-eyed. The Philadelphia was singing and found in the parking lot.
Three different singing Summer Tanagers were along the trail. Redstarts were
thick; other warblers were Parula, Pine, Prairie, Blackpolls everywhere,
Black-and-white, Ovenbirds, Louisiana Waterthrush, Common Yellowthroat,
Hooded Warbler, and lots of Chats.
Cheers...
Todd
