[va-bird] Fleming Mtn, Bedford C., VSO meeting scouting

Robert Ferrell and I spent the morning (7:15 AM-12:15PM) running the Fleming
Mountain/James River Overlook field trip route for this weekend's VSO annual
meeting. We came up with 70 species including 13 warblers. Not a major
migration fallout, but not a bad mix of residents and some migrants.
Highlights were nice looks at Cerulean Warblers, finding nests of
Yellow-throated Vireos and Baltimore Orioles to be able to point out this
weekend, and close-up looks at the Cliff Swallows overhead at a distance of
about 30 feet as they worked on their nests on the James River Overlook
bridge, and watching them congregate along the banks of the James River to
scoop up mud to use in nest construction. We also stopped at the
Georgia-Pacific ponds on Rt 501 briefly to pick up some of the waterbirds,
and at the Otter Creek Campground on the Parkway to see what was hopping
there. Hopefully this weekend will bring in an even bigger push of
migrants. Below is the morning's tally.
