[va-bird] Re: Fish Crow Flock

And Dave Larsen's post reminds me - around noon on Friday 11/25, just west of
Baileys Crossroads in Northern Virginia, I saw a mixed flock of 200+ crows
swirling about oak trees just off Columbia Pike. Many were briefly roosted in
the trees, with more flying in from all directions. Then they seemed to begin
to
disperse. I considered it, but if they were mobbing something I didn't see
their target.

This was the largest concentration of crows I've seen in the immediate
Arlington/Alexandria area for several years.Perhaps they are rebounding from
past
years' poisoning programs and impacts of West Nile Virus.

Then that evening, again around dusk, I had a Winter Wren calling and flying
at Long Branch Nature Center. Not surprisingly, it seems to like the downed
tree tangles still left over from Isabel. Cheers,

Steve Youngâs post on the 24th mentioned Fish Crows. Recently I too have
remarked on seeing and hearing so many at one time. Our house in Clifton is
only
one quarter mile from Bull Run. On winter afternoons we always see a steady
stream of crows flying east. This is a mixed flock, but usually there is
little vocalization so it is difficult to assess the proportions of the two
species
in it. This flock has been notably vocal. Three afternoons now around three o
âclock I have been outside and heard mostly Fish Crow calls, although there
are definitely some Common Crows as well. I donât know if someone has
located
the roost they are heading towards. I believe that in past years it has been
inside the Beltway in northeastern Fairfax County.
