VA Birders and Others,
I just received a call from Charles Kennedy, the owner of Raven Ridge Bed and
Breakfast and Campground, near Hayters Gap in Russell County. He had his first
male Ruby-throated Hummingbird today (3/26/05). This is a surpise since Raven
Ridge is above 3700 feet elevation. I would have thought that the early
migrants would have passed through at lower elevations, where insects and the
first blooming flowers could be found. Perhaps a person more knowledgeable on
hummer migration could throw a little light on the subject. Charles has two
hummer feeders out, so I suppose it's time for the rest of us to do the same.
