Howdy all,
Wow what a difference a day makes! There was birds dripping out of the trees
today at First Landing State Park. I had a pretty good and busy day banding.
Ended up with a total of 62 birds of 19 species. Best birds of the day banding
wise were Blue-Gray Gnatcatcher, Worm-eating Warbler, and two Great Crested
Flycatchers. There were large flocks of mix birds moving through the banding
station early to mid morning. On my walk out of the park, I found two very nice
groups of birds and chased them around for a while. It was a very enjoyable
time!
As a word of caution, there is pollen everywhere here!! Everything is yellow
so if you have problems with it, might want to bring a mask or something, it
is too nice here to just skip this place!
Banding totals for the day:
Prairie Warbler 1
Northern Parula 1
Black-and-white 3
Worm-eating 1
C. Yellowthroat 3

House Wren 2

The most abundant bird of the day was by FAR Yellow Palm Warblers! No joke, I
saw well over 200+ through the course of the day. Very beautiful and such a
nice treat!
Not to be out done, White-throated Sparrows were is large numbers as well. I
saw at least 100+ today. Also had a pair of Royal Terns fly over today as well.
If this north wind holds up though the night, a lot of these birds will be
sticking around! Hint hint! It is nice to see spring is actually here! Pollen
and all. I just hope the wind is not too bad the next few days so we can take
advantage of this sizable push of migrants.
Happy birding to all!
