Howdy all,
The last three days have been very slow at the banding station. So slow, we
only banded a total of 18 birds during those three days.
We are still seeing a few late migrants, but only a trickle. Not sure there
is much more coming either. So it looks like we are in for a long two weeks
before the season ends on the 15 June. More over, the bugs (mosquitos,
no-see-ems, and biting flies) are out in good numbers. Makes for a long morning!
As a side note from this weekend, I was appalled at the number of dog owners
that had their dogs of leashes! It is park rules that all dogs be leashed and
we enforce it at the banding station with additional signs. Guess dog leash
laws only pertain to certain dog owners. Its very upsetting. Not to be out
done, bicycles are not allowed on any trail except the Cape Henry trail, of
course
those laws mean nothing to particular individuals as well I guess. We had
five different bicyclists go by this weekend.
Anyway, here are the totals for each of the three days.
5/28:
American Redstart 2
Magnolia Warbler 1
Black-throated Blue Warbler 1
Blackpoll Warbler 1
Gray-cheeked Thrush 1
Gray Catbird 1
Northern Cardinal 2
Common Grackle 2
TOTAL------------------------------ 11
5/29:
American Redstart 1
Common Yellowthroat 1
American Goldfinch 1
Great Crested Flycatcher 1
TOTAL ------------------------------- 4
5/30:
Northern Waterthrush 1
Gray Catbird 1
Common Grackle 1
TOTAL ------------------------------- 3
I'm afraid to see what tomorrow brings--or what it doesn't!
Cheers,
Jethro Runco
